Flight of the Conchords는 뉴질랜드에서 결성한 코미디 팝 듀오이다. 그들의 말을 빌리자면 그들은 "New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo" 라고 한다. 참 구체적이면서도 다재다능한 사람들이다. 그들이 출연하는 시트콤도 있다. 시트콤 이름은 똑같이 "Flight of the Conchords". 라이브 실황 동영상도 많이 있는데, 이들에게는 뭔가 어색한 위트의 매력이 느껴진다.
이번 4월달에 1집 Flight of the Conchords를 냈는데, 다른 웃기고 끌리는 노래도 많이 있었지만 이 Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros가 특히 재미있고 중독적이었다. 제목과 가사에서 대충 알 수 있듯이 힙합 스타일로 힙합을 풍자하는 노래라고 할 수 있는데, 웃긴 가사는 둘째치고 일단 이 분들의 랩 실력에 빨려들어갔다. (패러디 가수는 다들 랩을 잘 하나보다. "Weird Al" Yankovic도 패러디한 힙합곡이 상당히 많다.) 어마어마한 중독성에 이끌려 이번 주만 해도 이 노래만 10번은 들었을 것이다.
보통 코미디나 패러디같은 소위 "novelty act"들은 그냥 한두 번 듣고 "ㅋㅋ 재밌네" 하고는 라이브러리 구석에 처박히기 마련인데, 이 밴드에는 뭔지 모를 끌림이 있다. 처음 몇 번 들을 때는 웃긴 가사에 즐겁고, 그 다음 몇 번 들을 때는 잘 짜여진 음악에 즐겁고, 그 후에 들을 때는 이미 "아~ 그노래? 그노래 좋지~"하는 식의 subconscious에 들어가 있는 게 Flight of the Conchords인 것 같다.
2분짜리 노래 하나 가지고 지루하지 않으려고 노력하며 주저리주저리하는 것도 상당히 힘들다.
